Accessibility Statement for Queen’s Portal
This statement applies to content published to the Queen’s Portal on the https://myportal.qub.ac.uk/ sub-domain. This statement does not apply to content on other systems or services linked to the Portal.

Queen’s Portal is run by Queen’s University Belfast. Digital accessibility is a primary consideration in our web development practices as we want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:
  • Zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen.
  • Navigate most of the website using just a keyboard.
  • Listen to most of the website using a screen reader.
  • Navigate most of the website using speech recognition software (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver).
AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

How accessible is this website?
Parts of Queen’s Portal are not fully accessible. For example:
  • Some tables used to present tabular data are not structured appropriately.
  • Headings may not appear in a logical order on some pages.
  • Some of our pages may contain content from systems provided by external suppliers. We will work with suppliers to improve the accessibility of their tools.
  • Some elements are not in the tab index.

What to do if you cannot access parts of this website

Enforcement procedure
The Equality Commission for Northern Ireland (ECNI) is responsible for enforcing the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018 (the ‘accessibility regulations’). If you’re not happy with how we respond to your complaint, contact the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland (ECNI) .

Technical information about this website’s accessibility
Queen’s University Belfast is committed to making Queen’s Portal accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

Compliance Status

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations
Some of our pages are non-accessible for the following reasons:
  • Element IDs are not unique.
  • No data cells assigned to table header.
  • • Element is not in the tab index (user cannot tab to an element to select it).

We plan to investigate each issue and fix it where possible. We will conduct regular tests of pages in an ongoing format to ensure that any new issues are identified and investigated.

Disproportionate burden
The disproportionate burden is not applicable as the scope of issues are confined to Queen’s Portal only and currently these issues are technically feasible to resolve.

Content that’s not within the scope of the accessibility regulations.

PDFs and other documents
Many of our older PDFs and Word documents do not meet accessibility standards - for example, they may not be structured so they’re accessible to a screen reader. This does not meet WCAG 2.1 success criterion 4.1.2 (name, role value).

The accessibility regulations do not require us to fix PDFs or other documents published before 23 September 2018 if they’re not essential to providing our services.

Any new PDFs or Word documents we publish will meet accessibility standards.

Third-Party Content
Queen’s Portal may contain content that is externally embedded or integrated. This externally embedded content can include but is not limited to information from social media platforms, chatbots, online forms and peer platforms. This is third-party content that is neither funded nor developed by us, nor under our control.

User-Added Content
Queen’s Portal will often require user-added content to facilitate normal operations. This content, which will often be in the form of images, text documents, and PDFs, is not generated by the University and is not within our control.

What we’re doing to improve accessibility
We are continually reviewing the accessibility of Queen’s Portal using accessibility auditing tools and other testing methods where necessary. This will provide us with the insights required to assess and improve aspects of Queen’s Portal that does not conform to level AA of the WCAG 2.1.

We will continue to use tools such as Siteimprove to identify potential issues and implement accessibility fixes.

We work with developers to ask that accessibility be reviewed as part of the development process. We work with system users to inform them that any documents added to the system should be accessible.
